Canon's new light weight Cinema Camera is just around the corner. While it has a hot of new features, you can learn about from the video above, the Canon EOS C50 is Canon's first 7K camera. We've been getting a lot of questions asking why that is. So we're going to break it down below. The most important thing to recognize. Is that, when shooting in the standard 16:9 aspect ratio, your maximum resolution is only 6K. In order to get that extra resolution you have to shoot in Open Gate (3:2). In the settings it's referred to as Full Frame 3:2.
- 7K 3:2 Open Gate - 6960 x 4640
- 6K 16:9 Full Frame - 6960 x 3672
- 5K 16:9 Super35 - 5036 x 2656

More people are shooting for multiple formats now. Open Gate gives you a full 4K 9:16 image in the center of your sensor. This makes shooting for Reels or Tiktok, and more standard deliverable formats much easier. It also has the added bonus of allowing the camera to use Full Frame Anamorphic Lenses without cropping off the top and bottom of the image like a tradition 16:9 sensor would.
This camera seems like a dream for multi format shooters. You can pre-order the Canon C50 here.
